Kutb Be Konkan Hazrat Makhdoom Ali Mahimi Saint Of Peace 2

Hazrat Makhdum Baba’s supernatural powers and piety gained much publicity and acclaim. Once in the assembly of pious men his position came under discussion. It was said that he was a very generous person and liked nice and sumptuous food. It was said that he was a turn of Insight and piety and held a high position in awliya (bloved of Allah). One of the attendants said that such combination cannot be found and that religious accomplishments and worldly preferences never went together because to him the (derwish) mendicants always cherished simple food. A heated discussion followed this statement but that man was not satisfied and he perferred to observe the situation himself. So he set out to meet Hazrat Makhdum personally. He came to Mahim and Hazrat Makhdum Baba lovingly lodged him in his guest house. At the meal-time, the dining-table was set and that day fish was served specially. The man found him the way he had heard about him. Hazrat Makhdum Baba was performing the duties of the host very graciously and requested the guest to do full justice to the food served. He had personally joined him in partaking food. He insisted that his guest should taste every item of the menu. Hazrat Makhdum Baba finished his food earlier than the guest. He dropped the bones of the fish in the wash-basin whilst washing his hands. When the guest completed his meal and washed his hands in the wash-basin, he found to his amazement that, instead of the bones, the fishes were swimming in the basin. He was astonished, his question received a very fitting answer. So he very earnestly and humbly asked for his forgiveness. Hazrat Makhdum showed his wisdom and affection. He excused him and said that he never intended to show any trace of pride or superiority but just wanted to prove that Allah is Al-mighty and shows His kindness to the one whom He likes.
(7) Since Mahim is situated on the sea-shore, the ships have been arriving there from different countries. Certain foreigners stayed there in rented houses for some period of time. Incidentally, a young, handsome and rich Arab trader reached there and he settled there for a couple of days. Perchance, he passed by the house of a girl and happened to see her. That very moment he fell in love with her and he expressed his feelings that he would like to marry the girl if she was unmarried. The people told him though the girl was unmarried she could not marry him because she had been engaged to the poor boy of Mahim.
The Arab trader said that the engagement could be broken and that he was prepared to bear the expenses.
Some people, that very day, approached the father of the girl who was already engaged with a (poor) boy. They misled the father and made him agreeable to break the engagement of his daughter and to get her married to the Arab trader.
In order to break the engagement, a meeting of the community was called. When this news reached the Arab trader, he felt extremely delighted. But that very news aggrieved and saddened that poor boy. There was none who could console him. Nonetheless, Allah had destined something else. When the boy reached the mosque the next morning for prayers, he was spotted by the Great Faqih, Hazrat Makhdum Ali and every thing had become clear to him. He called the boy aside and told him to be patient and thankful to Allah. He added that a truthful person always attained tranquility and peace of mind. He further said that he would personally attend the meeting of the community and would see as to what could be done for him and by what means. This kind and favourable attitude of Hazrat Makhdum Baba gladdened the boy and He busied himself with his daily routine. The meeting was held on the fixed time. Hazrat also reached there and was received very warmly by the people and was made the President of that meeting. The deliberations started and the problem of.the Arab trader was raised and the agenda of the break-up of the engagement with that boy on the basis of his poverty was discussed. At this point Hazrat explained that riches and poverty were not specially assigned to certain people and that, that distinction was meaningless. Someone, prone to tell lies, said that the boy had the habit of drinking. Then Hazrat inquired whether anybody had seen him drinking or in the state of inebriation. If not that would not be considered as evidence in which case that matter could be condoned. This situation silenced everybody arid then he delivered his judgement and that was that both the poor boy and the rich Arab trader should go on the pilgrimage of Hajj. And anyone of them who returned earlier than the other should be allowed to marry the girl. All the people unanimously agreed with this suggestion. The Arab trader was particularly happy since he owned a personal sailing ship which he could handle the way he wanted. He felt that his poor rival will go by some ship after paying the fare and would not be able to return early as per his desire.
Within next couple of days the Arab set sails for the pilgrimage. When the poor boy heard about his departure, he felt very depressed and conveycd the news to Hazrat who comforted him and told him not to worry as Allah would make all the arrangements.
In the meantime, the months of Shawal and Zilqad passed by and the moon of the month of Zilhajj made its appearance. The 8th of the said month came and none could see any arrangement being made for the departure of the boy and he was always being seen in Mahim. On the morning of the 9th when the Hajj was to be performed, the boy reached the mosque and Hazrat told him not to go anywhere after the prayers and should wait for him there only. He did as he was told and waited for Hazrat who ultimately came and proceeded with the boy towards the hoz of the masjid. Then they stood at the edge of the hoz and Hazrat told the boy close his eyes and not to open them till asked to do so. Then Hazrat held the hand of the boy and dived him into the hoz and after a few moments told the boy to open his eyes. When the boy opened his eyes, he found himself standing on the gate of the Khana-e-Ka’aba. Then Hazrat took out some money from his pocket and while giving it to the boy he said that he should purchase necessary provisions of the Hajj. He told him to meet the Arab trader who had lodged in a particular tent, that day. it-self. He was further told to meet Hazrat at that very spot after performing the Hajj and that he should keep the entire episode as well-guarded secret, The boy proceeded to do whatever he was asked to while thanking Allah. He was very happy as Allah had honoured him with the kindness of such an accomplished leader and monitor.
After wearing, Ihram he reached the plains of Arafat and searched the tent of the rich Arab trader and met him. Afterwards he performed the rites and rituals and other important duties pertaining to Hajj which he completed in two or three days and he reached Hateem on the 12th to meet Hazrat Makhdoom Baba. Hazrat Makhdum Baba again told him to close his eyes and after a short time they reached the masjid. Six months elapsed when the Arab trader returned to Mahim. The meeting of the community, as per the programme, was called again. Hazrat Makhdum Baba attended this meeting too. The Arab also came there. Hazrat Makhdum Baba asked him whether he had performed the Hajj on which he replied in the affirmative. He further asked him whether that boy had gone for Hajj and whether he had met the trader or whether he had seen him there. The trader replied that the boy had gone for Hajj and had met him in the plains of Arafat and that he had seen him performing the Hajj and all the relevant rites and rituals. Then Hazrat Makhdum Baba asked the traders whether that boy had returned to Mahirn earlier. They confirmed that he had certainly returned earlier. By the Grace of Allah this state of affairs consolidated the faith of the people that all that had happened was due to him and that it was his glance of favour that allowed the boy to win that contest. The Arab trader kept quiet and accepted his defeat. Finally that girl was married to that poor boy.
Apart from this, many other supernatural feats were exhibited by Hazrat Makhdum Baba.
Zauqui Shah Sahib writes as:
“He preferred a life of loneliness and obscurity for a considerable period of his life. But his knowledge and excellence, his extra ordinary feats, obvious as well as latent, his miracles and the supernatural events that were revealed by and through him, made the whole world attracted to him….”
[edit]Regular Practices

Muhammad has said:
“In the eyes of Allah, nothing is as lovely as a prayer to him”. So, then what can be said of its effect? To remember Allah, and describing and making mention of his name is called the Zikru-Allah. Whosoever remembers him and thinks of him all the time, will never disobey his orders and commands, on the contrary he will ever think of his pleasure and agreement in all of his deeds.
Allah, The Highest, reminds us in his Glorious Qura’n as:
“You remember me, then I will remember you.”.
Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi’s deeds and daily practices are not mentioned in any a book so correctly. But they are available to some extent through the writings in the “ Sharhe Sayyidul Istigfar” by which it seems that this particular prayer to Allah was one of the particular prayers and it is as : (The Translation) :
“My Allah, you, alone, are my Nourisher. There is no god worthy of worship except you. It is you that have given birth to me and I am your slave. I shall remain firm on my promises to you to my level best. I seek your shelter against my evil deeds and I do admit your favours upon me and I repent for my sins. You, please, forgive me because no one will be able to forgive the sins except you”
Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi had written a book, “Al Wajood Fi Sharh-e-Asmaul Ma’bud. He had written the analysis and the qualities of Allah’s self-related and qualitative names of allah. But, Alas! That book is not available to-day.
Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi in his Exegesis of the Qura’n, has mentioned the mysteries and the realities of the Sura’ Fatiha more than any other one. To him Sura Fatiha is the key to the treasures of all the divine knowledge of the Quran. Unlimited number of names of theirs are mentioned in it. There is no other Sura to match it for the qualities of it. Recitation of it is equal to reciting of the whole Qura’n. In the many names that are given to it, it is, also, remembered by the names of Surat-ud-Dua, Surat-ul-Munajat, Suratul Shifa’a and Suratul Rukiya. Muhammad has said: “There is remedy for each and every disease in Sura Fatiha”. Once. The Prophet Salla Allahu ta’ala’alayhi wa sallam recited it and blew it over a patient. The patient recovered his health at the very time. Makhdum Sahib used to advise to recite it.
Conveying best wishes that is the Durood is also a source of prosperity and recompensation. Muhammad has said : “Whosoever sends me the Durood for one time, Allah and His angels convey the Durood to him for ten times. And Allah, the Highest. wipes, off ten of his sins and his position is raised ten degrees aboye.” And Muhammad has said this. also : ‘On the day of Judgement. a person who sends me Durood in abundance will be more close to mc than others’. ‘To recite Durood after every prayer makes the prayers more effective and acceptable.
Hazarat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi has. in all of his works. laid much stress on reciting the Durood. In his own exegesis, too, after the end of each and every Sura, he has not forgotten to write down the Durood. It makes the inclination of his mind and heart quite obvious.
[edit]Death

The Crowned King of the saintly world, the ever expansive ocean of the divine knowledge, the Master of the mysteries of Shariat, the expert in the Philosophy of Existence. The Sun of Kokan Hazrat Makhdum Ali Faquih Mahaimi at the age of 59 years got resigned of his Akhir 835 H.. on Friday night accordingly in February 1431 A.D. got united to his real beloved. (Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun). And on Friday. when a quarter of day had passed over, he was laid in the grave in the graveyard of his relations. The chronogram of his death is represented by the term ‘Jannatul Firdaus’.
[edit]Jannatul Firdaus

Hazrat Makhdum attained the sainthood (Walayat) in lieu of his glorious mother. And he served the religion to his best and wrote so many books and he left behind a treasure of his works to satisfy the thirst of the seekers of knowledge and literature. His glorious mother Hazrat Bibi Fatima (MAA SAAB) was very much grieved on his death. She was restless throughout and she was never at rest any time. At last, after his death only forty days has passed and she, too, left this world on 17th of Rajabul-Murajjab 835 Hijri. Her grave is situated at the left side of the grave of herdutiful son, Hazrat Makhdum. May Allah’s beneficence and favour be bestowed upon them and may Allah grant us with the right spirit to show our love to them in right way and may we be bestowed with their favours and good wishes. Ameen.
[edit]The Tomb Of The Maid-Servant

The maid-servant of Huzur Makhdum who had obtained through his spiritual favours, the miracle of earthen medicine of which more description is to follow, remained alive many days, even after his and his mother’s death. More particulars of her life could not be made available than what we have written. By speculation, it seems that this maid has served Makhdum Ali in such a manner that she could have served him in his private life, too, because her tomb is also to the southern side. inside the court of the tomb. The date of her expiry could not be known due to the fact that there was a lack of historians in that period. If they were there, more details about Makhdum Sahib would have been obtained through this maid and the date of her death, too, would have come to the light.
[edit]Construction Of The Mausoleum

18th century's img
The construction of the mausoleum was taken place by Gujarat Muslim Ruler only after the death of Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi and after two and half centuries later on in 1085 H. the consctruction of the big dome took place It was 77 years after that the four domes and the courtyard were constructed in 1163 H.
The main characteristic of this building is this the viewer is not able to understand that any part of it has been constructed later on or it has been designed and worked out by some other architect than the original one. It seems that the whole building was constructed at one and the same time.
The Bombay Gazette, written in the British rule, has given a clear picture of its historical importance. Although. much more changes have taken place as regards the conditions of those days and the shape and size of the mausoleum and even the atmosphere is changed, even then. it increases our knowledge and information in respect of many things. It has been written in Bombay Gazette” that :-
In the memory of this Sufi (the Saint). just after his death, a mausoleum and a mosque were constructed. In the year 1674 AD., accordingly in 1085 H. the expansion and repairs of it were taken place. And in the year 1748 AD. accordingly in 1163 H. a verandah was constructed and got extended. Today, too, it is as it was in Mahim.

Hand-Written Qur'an Sharif

Qur’an Sharif in Calligraphy
THE HAZRAT MAKHDOOM MASJID
Whichever be the masjid. it is worthy of respect and veneration. Moreover, the masjid that might have got constructed by a certain Wali ( a saint) of Allah. must be of great honour and importance. The Mosque or masjid which is very adjacent to the shrine of Makhdum is itself constructed by Hazrat Makhdum himself and wherein, for years together Hazrat Makhdum offered prayers to Allah and worshipped him and remained busy and engrossed in the deeds and activities that make one close to Allah. This mausoleum is a historical as well as religious memoir to the Muslims.
The articles used by the religious saintly people which were of more attachment to them are preserved as a present for receiving benediction from the followers, like the rosary, the prayer carpet, robe and the turban, the staff etctera. But Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi was more attached to reading and writing. He had mastery in the art of calligraphy, too. That is why, in his relics, there is a hand-written Qura’n,The Glorious, in the style of ‘Naskh’ a usual form of Arabic script which has been preserved into the shrine and it is opened for its sighting every year on 29th night of RamzanulMubarak and the people are happy and delighted to view it.
The death anniversary of Hazrat Makhdum Ali is celebrated every year on eighth of Jamadil Akhir at night, in the mausoleum. The sandal traditions are carried on by the Dargah (mausoleum) Trust and the visits and the sittings and congregations of Milad Sharif are held. The court of the mausoleum is open throughout that night. Every month on eighth night the milad khwani is held.
[edit]The Saintly School Of Thought

In India, many a saintly guides with the chain and succession to Qadiriya, Soharwardiya. Naqshbandiya, Chishtiya. Idrusia. Shutariya and Rifayia were born who, with their love, humanity, equality and impartiality and good manners inculcated the feelings and passions of sincerity and truthfulness and changed the life-style of their followers completely. We do not find the name of Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi attached to any of the above line of the saints. As a matter of fact, his whole life was dedicated to the philosophy and that is why the writers of the biographies have called him “Awaisi”. In the terminology of the Sufis (the saints), an Awaisi’ is called only to that person who receives the divine source of knowledge without the help of any guide or the saints. In this regard. some are of the opinion that whosoever follows the tradition of the Muhammad by his words and deeds. is an Awaisi. Some say that whosoever is favoured and benefitted by Khizr Alaih salaam is an Awaisi, whereas some are of the opinion that any of the saintly people who has some say that whosoever has been graced with a formal penetration in concealment without the mediation of any body is an Awaisi. This last one was availed of by the most of the Companions of Muhammad in the long past. In view of Shah Waliullah. Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi’s place and position in respect of spiritualism can be judged by the writings of Hazrat Shah Waliullah Dehlawi which have been recorded with a title ‘Nur-e-Nabuwwat Ke Tabqat’ in his book ‘Khairul Kasser”. In his own writings, Shah Sahib has placed Makhdum Sahib in the group of elderly saints of Allah. He says,te In our opinion, there are four stages or grades of Messengerhood. The first one is that which by the estimation of their nature was awarded to the philosophers of their communities. The second group is of those who were impressed by Muhammad so much that they developed the state of guidance to the people and they considered all the creatures under their guidance. The third grade is of those who followed the traditions and Shariat with utmost obedience such as are Hazrat Gausul Azam, Shaikh Soharwardy, Najmuddin Kari. Shaikh Bahual Haq, the parents of Shaikh Harwi. Makhdum Ali Mahaimi and Maulana Haji. [4]

[edit]Greater Bombay Police

Bombay Police Officers and the constables are personally attached to Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi. But every year, apart from that, the Police Department, on the occasion of his death anniversary (Urs) shows their devotion to such a manner that it has set an example of its own not to match it by any other in the whole of India. In this way they express their attachment to such a great scholar and spiritual person. For that expression of their attachment to Makhdum Shah Mahaimi, the Mahim Police Station Staff represents the whole Bombay Police Department In Mahim Police Station, there is a special room which is called Makhdum Baba Room. It was got built and constructed by an English Senior Inspector of Police at Mahim PoliceStation in the time of British Rule in India. In this particular room, are stored the relics of Makhdum Shah era, such as Goods to be used for Sandal, flat dishes, bed sheets, shawls and some other things and articles. The roon is highlyadorned and given respect by the police men. They do not enter it with their shoes on. The Urs of Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi is held, generally, in the month of December. It lasts. for ten days. For that purpose the Police Department forms a. Urs Committee and, generally, the Senior Inspector of the Mahim Police Station is the Chairman of it. The whole arrangement of the Urs for ten days is in the hands of the Mahim Police Department. The Thirty Six Thousand or so police officers and the constables give their contribution willingly for the Sandal and other celebrations as regards the Dargah, the Shrine of Hazrat Makhdum Shah Baba.
The Qutb-e-Kokan (The Polar Star of Kokan) Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi’s Urs is celebrated for ten days. Every year, it is deemed inevitable the Greater Bombay Police is to present its Sandal before all others. The preparations go on before the Urs starts. The Mahim Police gets a new look with its cleaning and new painting of the Police Station. Adequate arrangement of lighting is done to befit this occasion. Mahim Police Station is the only one and the only police station all over India where, on behalf Bombay Police, such celebrations as recitation of the Qura’n. Milad (Ode to the birth of Muhammad), Gatherings for Salat and Salam and so on are held.
On the first day of the Urs, after the early morning prayers, the recitation of the Quran is held in the room of the Senior Inspector of the Mahim Police Station. After it is over, the gathering of recitation of poetry in the praise of Muhammad, conveying of best wishes to him and his nativity (Milad Khwani) are celebrated in the courtyard of the Police Station of Mahim. After the Noon-time (Zohar) prayers are over, the procession of the police on behalf of the Police Station, starts. Even the Police Commissioner, the inspectors, with the flat-dishes (thals) of Sandal on their hands, walk on foot in the procession.
In this ceremony of the procession of Sandal, all the police stations of the Grater Bombay are represented by their presence through their police officers, constables and their family members. After it is over, then and then only, the other Sandals can be presented on the Shrine. It is said that in the first Sandal ceremony, the majority is of the police and their relatives. After the sandals are presented the offerings and the sweets are distributed and sent to all the Crime Branches and other departments of all the seventy two Police Stations all over Bombay . In all the ten days of the celebrations of the Urs, the musical programmes and singing are held in the courtyard of the Police Station of Mahim.
[edit]Ex-Deputy Commissioner

A REPORT BY EX-DEPUTY COMMISSIONER OF BOMBAY POLICE DR. KAPSE
Any way, as to why the policemen and specially the Mumbai Police has got so much spiritual attachment, (the devotion) to Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi? In this respect there are different theories and traditional narrations made by different thoughts of people. But Dr. Kapse has endeavoured to find out the secret of this devotion of Bombay Policemen to Hazrat Makhdum Mahaimi, in the light of historical documents and records. Dr. Kapse, being renowned in the police department as a researcher, has carried out a research on Mumbai City and the history of the Mumbai Police. And Mumbai has, in appreciation to entry into the Maharashtra Police as a sub-inspector of police, Dr. Kapse obtained, during his period of service, degrees of graduation, post graduation and doctorate. It is, really, very laudable. The research in the history of the police has remained his main field in his research activities. Some years back, he was a senior inspector at Mahim Police Station. At present, in the position of Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Kapse has thrown light on the above mentioned subject and has said as follows.
This fact has been established with the means of the archaeology department that the personality of Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi continued to be extraordinary and miraculous. Hazrat Makhdum Baba’s period is considered to be 1335 A.D. to 1360 A.D. and around it. In that time Bombay consisted of seven islands and a few hutments. There was no trace of police department in those days. Bombay was ruled by the King of Gujrat.
Today, the place where the Mahim Police Station is situated, there was the residential house of Makhdum Shah Mahaimi
Through the records of the Archaeology Department, the fact is quite clear that Hazrat Makhdum Shah used to go to Makkah and Madina, during the night time to fetch water for his mother and he used to return in the morning, whereas in those days a journey to Makkah and Madina would take months together.
Deputy commissioner, Dr. Kapse added that Mahim is situated at the sea-shore but there is a well near the shrine of which the water is sweet and worth drinking. This fact is not less than a miracle being a well of drinking water near the sea of salt water. The regular administration of the police department in Bombay came to be established in the year 1660 A.D. Whereas, the devotion of the Bombay police is a thing to be considered, there is a historical record, in this concern, of the British Period. There is given an event that throws light over this attachment of the Bombay Police to Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi. The details of it are as under.
In the very period of The Britishers, the smuggling started in Bombay City. There was no trace of smuggling as such in the world of crimes. No one knew what the smuggling is in those days. When the smuggling started in the city, the Britishers set up posts (chowkies) to prevent it and to watch the ports and the coast areas. And such a post ‘came into being in Mahim’s sea-side area.
Relating this event, Dr. Kapse said that, for the watch, the police men, too, were appointed. One night, there was a single policeman on his duty in his turn, he observed one ship anchoring at the sea-side in the middle of the night. It was a ship of the smugglers and they were readying themselves to get the smuggling goods emptied there.
The police constable challenged the smugglers and in turn they started pelting stones at him. in the meantime, the police constable saw on that sea-shore a bearded elderly man dressed in white clothes. The elderly man called out to the police constable and said, “Come on, come to me”. To save himself from that pelting of stones, the police constable reached the elderly man.
The smugglers continued their stone-pelting act but It was only from the distance of fifteen feet that the stones began to return and in spite of the stone going towards the constable, they started going back to the smugglers themselves. In this way, it is said that by arriving there in time, Hazrat Makhdum Baba saved the life of the police constable.
Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Kapse said that this event of the time of the British Rule in India, is still in record, even today, of the Archaeology Department. Any way, why and what for Dr. Kapse had the idea of carrying research on Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi and that too, by the means of the government records? Dr. Kapse explained it that it was the Police Commissioner, S. Rama Murthi who ordered him to file a report in the light of the Government records on Hazrat Mukhdum Shah Mahaimi and he, himself was the Senior Inspector of the Mahaim Police Station.
Deputy Commissioner, Dr. Kapse describing the devotion of the police toMakhdum Shah Mahaimi, in the light of the government records, said that there are so many incidents of revelations and miracles per taining to Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi in the government records of the Archaeology Department but there are so many other events related to the private and personal life of the so many officers and constables attached to the Mumbai Police, concerning Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi and that is why the Mumbai Police honours and glorifies Hazrat Makhdum Shah Mahaimi and express their devotion to him. The policemen, very often, when they are in family troubles or in their occupational hazards, they go to the shrine of Baba Makhdum and make an ardent appeal to him to solve their difficulties and relieve them from the tension and to their surprise their appeals are answered positively and favourably, it is but a part of everybody’s personal belief and faith. [6]
[edit]Works

The most important among the books that Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahairni has go to his credit is the exegecis of the Qura’n namely “Tabseer-e-Rehmani. We have mentioned it above already. Besides this these following works, too, belong to Hazrat Makhdum Ali Mahaimi --------- which are in Arabic language.
1. lna’mul Malikul Ullam Jahkam Hukmul Ahkam 2. Awwalatu-d-Tawheed. 3. Ajallatu-d-Ta’id Fi Sharh-e-Adallatu-d-Tawheed. 4. An Nurul Athar Fi Kashf-e-Sirral Qaza wa Qadar. 5. Hazrat Makhdum Ali was a great religious scholar and an exegetical writer. He wrote more than hundred books and treatises. “Tabseerur Rehmani” is his exegesis of the Qur’an. It is highly acclaimed by the scholars in India and all over the world.
Moulana Baqar Agha writes in his ‘Nafhatul Ambriya’ that his” Tafseerur Rahman” is a piece of chosen works.
Moulana Abdul Hai has to say in his Yad-e-Ayyam’ that a man would come in a fit of religious frenzy by reading this exegesis like” Tabseerur Rehman”.
