Beggars Of Mahim Dargah, a photo by firoze shakir photographerno1 on Flickr. The Dargah lane leading to Mahim Dargah from the main road has a strange assortment of beggars , drug induced beggars , crippled deformed beggar and the very poor who have no option but to beg to make ends meet ..
The Bawas Of Mahim, a photo by firoze shakir photographerno1 on Flickr. Shooting the Bawas Rafaees or Malangs is a great help in study of faces and Sufi portraiture , but the problem is some dont like their pictures being taken , they call it haram or a taboo against their faith religious beliefs ,, I shoot them first and if they object I dont shoot them ..there have been moments when the person I shot got wild bit I managed to control the situation and avoided shooting the person next time .
Of late I dont have much problem as most of them know I dont mean them harm..
Kashmiri Bawa, a photo by firoze shakir photographerno1 on Flickr. I have known Kashmiri Bawa a Rafaee since many years , as I have been documenting the Chancawali or Chand Shah Wali Rafaees close to 10 years , they gather once a year at Makhdhoom Shah Baba Urus at the Dhuni and than after the Urus move to the main road Mahim dargah of Baba Fakhruddin.
Kashmiri Bawa is a very silent mute person , you wont ever hear his voice , he does oddjobs with the Rafaees and is a peaceful guy , I love shooting him , and there are times I wonder why have not asked him more about his life , I never do I just shoot them move on..
I meet him at Haji Malang and Ajmer too... is he a Kashmiri .. I dont know but he is addressed as Kasjmiri bawa , he is very diminutive small built man..
The Kids Of Indraji Nagar Slums Bandra West, a photo by firoze shakir photographerno1 on Flickr. Like Gonsalves Wadi this too is a high end slum in Bandra West, and some of the residents well off well settled , the Indraji Nagar slum exits near Galaxy close to Transit Camp and gives way to Rajiv Nagar slums ..very strategically spaced ..earlier I was told this was the sea area and the Dhobi Ghats all reclaimed ,,,close to Bandra Reclamation.
The kids will all come out in flashy clothes and finery on Eid looking forward to Eidi as the Indraji Nagar slums has a large Muslim population with a few Hindu families ..
The Kids Of Chinchpokli Road Bandra, a photo by firoze shakir photographerno1 on Flickr. Gonsalves wadi belongs to the Gonsalves family and is a private property with high end slums , off De Monte Road , and a marshy ground where kids play basketball ,..my early years in Bandra were spent passing this road that leads out to Bandra Hill Road ..it is an access road to Bandra Bazar Road and De Monte Street ..
This is a very narrow road always congested with unnecessary traffic vehicles human and goats.
The kids here love to be photographed , and this was shot a long way back so most of them may have grown but they are hope for a better tomorrow,,, all school going kids ,, and here all communities live in peace ..giving space respect to each others religion rituals and culture.
The Basket Weavers Of Bandra Reclamation, a photo by firoze shakir photographerno1 on Flickr. Nomadic tribal the women men children of this quintessential community are evenly scattered between Bandra Reclamation ,,a few under the bridge on SV Road on a traffic island near the Mithi River , further near Mahim causeway .. the rest predominantly at Mori Road Mahim close to Mahim station.
They live on the roads pavements illegally , perhaps paying hafta to the local goons and the authority rogues ..their temporary dwellings are well grounded , and they proliferate , bringing in relatives and new kids , to meet the demand of baskets in Mumbai.
I have only shot them when I pass them either through a bus window or through a cab.. they dont mix mingle with the locals having their own intrinsic dialect and tribal uniqueness individuality..they are not photogenic , shabbily dressed , but the work they do has photographic symmetry ..
They are mostly found in the Western suburbs..the women work hard…
The Shadow Boxer ..., a photo by firoze shakir photographerno1 on Flickr. dancing on the soul of mother earth fighting the 'demons of lost illusions since birth austerity path to salvation sans mirth humility the essence of hope death rekindling another rebirth
This series is private and is not for public view ..it shows the ardent devotion of Hijras and their contribution to the poor and the influence of the Holy Saint both at Taragadh and Ajmer Sharif.. I have documented this relationship from 2005 onward ,,,
