The Marathi Kulfiwala On Mahim Beach

The Marathi Kulfiwala On Mahim Beach, a photo by firoze shakir photographerno1 on Flickr. The Marathi manoos indigenous inhabitant of Mumbai works with dignity and does not complain , he does not take law in his hands or goes on strike bringing the entire machinery of the state to a halt and I talk of these people the kolis or the dabbawalas ..none of the governments that came to power in Maharashtra have ever done anything for whatever is done is like powder lipstick just cosmetic on the surface.

So I showcase their humility their culture of work and pride in whatever they do, be it selling vegetables in the local market..

Shilpa Koli Pierced Her Cheeks This Year Too.., a photo by firoze shakir photographerno1 on Flickr. Last year it was her first time, helped supported by her husband she had her cheeks pierced , she went into a trance the Goddess entered her body and she went berserk dancing with the rod portruding from her mouth.. the dance of Kali.

This year too she had her cheeks pierced and the Goddess entered her body again , I shot the pictures of the ritual you will wait sometime to see it, I shoot as a story board.

Her daughter was around but she sent her away when the piercings took place on Mahim beach.

I shot her extensively I must confess ..her husband her brother in law and other koli fisherwomen gave her spiritual support .

About Goddess Marriamman

About Goddess Marriamman, a photo by firoze shakir photographerno1 on Flickr. Mariamman is a South Indian mother Goddess predominantly worshipped in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. She is worshipped mainly by the tamil speaking population in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.

The origin of Goddess Mariamman is unclear. Mari in Tamil means rain. Mariamman is an ancient village goddess related to fertility and rain. Mari also means change. Thus, the name Maria Amman would mean goddess who has changed. According to some, Mariamman is the sister of Lord Ranganatha (Maha Vishnu) and called Mahamaya. The Samayapuram Mariamman is worshipped on the first day of the Tamil month of Vaikasi by the Iyengar/Srivaishna Brahmins of Srirangam. Another version suggests that she is the mother of Parasurama, Renukadevi who is appeased for rains. Mariamman was the smallpox goddess before this disease was eradicated and is similar to Sitala Devi in this respect.

Marriamman Feast Macchimar Colony Mahim 2012

Marriamman Feast Macchimar Colony Mahim 2012, a photo by firoze shakir photographerno1 on Flickr. This is my new set I shot this evening from 4 pm till 9 pm.. barefeet .

My son Saif Shakir dropped me at the Marriamman Temple Macchimar or Fishermans Colony Mahim.

The folks here were surprised why I had not come in the morning to shoot the animal slaughter ritual, but I was actually waiting for a call from them which never came so I did not go.

But I would not miss the cheek piercing rituals so here I was paying my respect to Goddess Marriamman.. her people her followers her world I document share online.

I shot Krishna hijra dressing the Goddess replica and than moved to the beach to shoot the rituals the puja the possession where the Goddess enters the body of the head priest Ganesh and also enters the body of Krishna hijra.

Krishna has just returned from the Koovagam eunuch festival at Koothandavar in Tamilnadu close to Pudicherry .

He has promised to take me with him next year.
