The Shias Of Chennai Ashura Day

This was shot in 2010 yet it seems I shot it yesterday and I am humbled by the hospitality humility of the Chennai Shias I shot this saddest day of our Shia ethos  as a Shia and as a photo journalist .

The strange thing about the Shia community in India they have never tried to reach out to Media to spread the Humanity of Hussain..and I am a blogger I shot Shiasm initially to reach out to my foreigner and Non Shia friends who wanted to know more about Imam Hussain and the Battle of Karbala and its lifelong effect on our spirituality and our lives .

The dumbest thing I found was people among the Shia community with pea brain s thought I shot this to sell pictures and if there was someone who would buy my entire 55000 plus Shia images I would give it willing and give the entire money not to build a mosque or a madrsa but to the poor of India irrespective of caste color or creed  because Hussainiyat counts hearts not heads and I am an Indian first ..

The poor of my country are very poor…

The Single Blade Of Shia Chennai Zanjir Matam

The flagellating blades or the Zanjir differ in size and length .

The Shias of Chennai use a single blade cutting their backs very effectively ,

I have shot a guy from Malam who used 36 inches blades at Mumbai Amin Imambada .

The most deadly Mumbai zanji is the hockey stick shaped blade ..

Blades are made from tempered steel and matamdars like Ali Shah Bhai Habib Nasser get their blades custom made ,, the lighter the blade it hit cuts deeper .

I use a dagger instead of flagellating blades because of a frozen shoulder problem one I used Zanji leaping in the air doing Tandav on the Soul of Shimr.

Now since several years I have been cutting my head with a short sword size dagger ,, my daggers are from Pushkar .

Day of Ashura marks a global protest against the tyrant rulers specially cursing the Yazid I who martyred Husayn ibn Ali for refusing to take the oath of his allegiance. It is commemorated by Shi'a Muslims as a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram in the year 61 AH (in AHc: October 9,[1] and in AHt: October 10, 680 CE) [2] In some Shi'a regions of Muslim countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Lebanon, Bahrain, and Pakistan, the Commemoration of Husayn ibn Ali has become a national holiday and most ethnic and religious communities participate in it.[3][4] Even in predominantly Hindu majority but secular…
