General Information:

The GSB Seva Mandal's idol at King's Circle, Mumbai is a legend. This Ganpati is a legend for its miraculous healing powers. This Ganpati is said to have cured devotees of ailments ranging from diabetes to cancer. It has been attracting the faithful ever since 1954, when it was first installed here by Gowd Saraswat Brahmins from South Kanara who were grateful to the city for offering them livelihoods.

During the Annual 5 - Day Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrations, Sixty priests from Karnataka perform the Daily Pujas here after which devotees are served the mahaprasad on a banana leaf. There is no recorded music at this Ganpati mandal. Traditional Indian musical instruments that are used in South Indian temples accompany the pujas. When a devotee's wish is fulfilled, he offers jewellery or coconuts worth his weight to the Ganpati in thanksgiving.

This Ganesha idol is adorned with more than 60 kgs of gold and 175 kgs of silver and is undoubtedly the costliest Ganesha in Mumbai. The 21-feet clay idol is also among the tallest Ganapati idols in Mumbai.

The crown of this Ganesha is made out of 22 kilograms of gold. Gold adorns the ears, feet, hands and trunk of the idol. Apart from this there are gold flowers, embroidery, necklace, a cobra and throne with lions on either side.

The GSB Ganesh is also insured for a whopping 70 million rupees and the GSB Seva Mandal committee pays a yearly premium of Rs.250, 000.

A highly praiseworthy aspect of GSB Seva Mandal at Matunga is the use of eco-friendly Clay Ganesha. The committee is also making an attempt to make the Ganesh festival more nature friendly by cooking and providing ‘prasad’ using eco-friendly methods. (read less)
