The Humility Of The Goud Saraswat Brahmin

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Goud (also spelt as Gaud or Gawd) Saraswat Brahmins are a Hindu Brahmin community in India and a part of the larger Saraswat Brahmin community. They are popularly referred to as GSBs. They are Konkani people and primarily speak Konkani as their mother tongue. They are the first Rigvedic Brahmins.

They claim their origin to the Brahmins who lived on the banks of the now-extinct river Saraswati of Pakistan Punjab or Kashmir. They derived their name from either the river Saraswati or from their spiritual leader, the sage Saraswat Muni(sage) who lived on the banks of Saraswati. These Brahmins were one of the Pancha Gawda Brahmin groups who lived north of the Vindhyas. They belonged to Smarta tradition and primarily worshiped the five deities: Shiva, Vishnu, Devi, Surya and Ganesha. Throughout the course of history, the Saraswat Brahmins have migrated to a variety of locations and are found mostly in Western coast of India.

Rituals[edit]
During the eighth month of pregnancy, a woman moves to her mother's house, especially during the birth of her first child. The expecting mother also performs Ganapathi Pooja for a successful delivery and a healthy child. On the 6th day, a pen and lamp are kept near the child's head, symbolic of a wish for an intelligent child. On the 12th day, the naming and cradling ceremony is performed wherein the paternal grandmother whispers the child's name into his/her ear and a horoscope is cast.[citation needed] When the child turns three months old, they are taken to the temple, and thereafter the child goes to the father's abode.[1]

Festivals[edit]
GSB's celebrate almost all festivals in Hinduism, and follow the Hindu lunar calendar (Panchang in Konkani) that gives the days on which the fasts and festivals should be observed.[2]

I have a cosmic connection with the GSB Lord Ganesha King Circle  and his followers Gaud Saraswat Brahmins .

I got an invitation to visit the GSB Seva Mandal King Circle from Amit Dinesh Pai .. son of my dearest friend late Mr Dinesh Pai..

His sister Anita Kamat Pai was there with her two children Amits wife kids and Amits mom.. Thanks to Amit Pai and my other GSB friends I was given a strategic position in front of Lord GSB and I shot the Artis Pujas before Visarjan including the auction ,

I met Dr BU Pai my mentor and his family his father in law Mr Shenoy and Sandip and  Sunil Shenoy my other GSB friends .

I did not wait for the Lords Visarjan departure , as I was barefeet and I have a deep diabetic wound on my feet so walking with Lord GSB was really not possible this time ,,

I bid farewell to all my friends walked till King Circle Station and took a train back home to Bandra Station , from Bandra Station I walked home with a limping leg.

And I shot a 13 GB card ,, I am uploading now ,,at Flickr

The Shias Of Chennai Ashura Day

This was shot in 2010 yet it seems I shot it yesterday and I am humbled by the hospitality humility of the Chennai Shias I shot this saddest day of our Shia ethos  as a Shia and as a photo journalist .

The strange thing about the Shia community in India they have never tried to reach out to Media to spread the Humanity of Hussain..and I am a blogger I shot Shiasm initially to reach out to my foreigner and Non Shia friends who wanted to know more about Imam Hussain and the Battle of Karbala and its lifelong effect on our spirituality and our lives .

The dumbest thing I found was people among the Shia community with pea brain s thought I shot this to sell pictures and if there was someone who would buy my entire 55000 plus Shia images I would give it willing and give the entire money not to build a mosque or a madrsa but to the poor of India irrespective of caste color or creed  because Hussainiyat counts hearts not heads and I am an Indian first ..

The poor of my country are very poor in childrens homes in widow s homes the aged the homeless .. but I know those who hire Shia photographers to shoot clips in most cases is for Noha albums.. and sadly I am not part of that aspect of my religiosity ,

Every man be it a Nohakar or even the Maulana earns professionally but it is the photographer abused humiliated the most in Shia circles specially in a city like Mumbai that I dont shoot Shiasm .I shoot all religion and that is why God saw that I was born in India the land of my Karma and my Dharma . Yes I use Hindu metaphors with due respect to my cultural inheritance my land is India my roots are Indian..

Some distastefully to mock me call me Hindu Shia and I am proud to be part of a Hindu ethos and a being born in a Shia mothers womb.

My upbringing has been very different I cant change that to your blinkered convenience I had great parents and they taught me the true meaning of Humanity ,, living mutually respectfully among Hindus Christians Parsis Buddhists and a few Jews too.

I had my schooling in a Baptist Protestant school later in a Catholic convent school and I am still part of my Faith and a good Muslim .

And I shoot Moharam away from my city to show you the pain that effects us all we call Ghame Hussain.

And my Shia friends in Chennai left no stone un turned to let me shoot their Moharam.. I am thankful to Mir Ashfaque BHai who connected me to MIr Meesaq  and the rest is over 1200 images I shot and to Dr Abbas who let me stay in his house and took me to Jigedevi near Dharmapuri to shoot the Ag Ka Matam walking on fire ,

My Moharam in Chennai can be seen fully at Flickr if you are a Flickr member as some images of children head cutting I have restricted from public view .

I am updating this set with new thoughts new hope ,, I dont know if I will ever go back to Chennai to shoot Moharam it all depends on Bibi Fatima who leads me with her hanky all over India to shoot her greiving followers lovers of her son Imam Hussain , Labbaik Ya Hussain.
